All politics is identity politics - it's just that for the past several hundreds of years, the interests of white, Christian, able-bodied, hetero men have been so at the forefront as the "default" citizen that we don't recognize how they have built and maintained the structures to continue to support their interests. When others try to do the same, they get asked, "Why can't you just see yourself as an individual rather than a part of a group (whose interests have been systematcially marginalized for hundreds of years)?" When we start treating everyone as individuals, that's when people can begin identifying that way more fully.
