and slavery, and class stratification, and racism, and homophobia, and women as second class citizens and gross income disparity, and violence as a way to demonstrate that you are "a real man" as well as a whole host of other demands on men that drive substance abuse, loneliness, and suicide.

Sure, some good things came out of patriarchy, but there's also no evidence that they wouldn't have been developed without it. After all, we already had all the basics of what we consider "civilization" before that.

I don't understand why so many men are so Rah Rah for a social system that is literally killing them by the millions. Stockholm syndrome, I guess....

The American Psychological Association just issued new guidelines for working with men and boys based on 40 years of research. Here's what they concluded:

"The main thrust of the subsequent research is that traditional masculinity—marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression—is, on the whole, harmful (to men)."
