Arial literally gives up her voice in order to gain the love of a man. That's patriarchy in a nutshell, I'd say, but I do agree with you that we don't have to banish fairytales as long as other narratives and models for young women and girls also exist. I'm super happy to see Disney creating more diverse stories where not all girls are obsessed with finding a prince who will save them. I'm in my late 50s and there were no other stories when I was young. As a consequence, I was in college before I figured out that women could exist not just in relation to men - but on their own - no kidding.
