As of right now, those who are forming mobs based on disinformation are overwhelmingly of the party that has gotten put into power, despite not winning the popular vote. The electoral college is clearly not the solution to that particular problem.
Your question about Wyoming is a specious one. Without the EC, the votes of those who live in Wyoming would count just as much as those of any individual living anywhere else in the nation. That's the whole point.
Of course the President has some effect on the Federal departments, but as someone who used to work for the Federal government, I know that there is also a limit to that, based in part on how much Congress is willing to rein that person in.
Democracy is messy and imperfect, but the Founding Fathers established the EC specifically to quell the fears of those amongst them who feared democracy because it was so new. It is by design, an anti-democratic thing, and that is the most important reason that it should be dispensed with.
