As someone who is happily married I still say Yes to all of this. Women are absolutely sold a bill of goods about all of that, and instead of being armed with skills in advocating for and communicating your own needs in balance with those of your partner and children, women are taught to put themselves last and then told that should fulfill them. It doesn't. Even women who love being a wife and mother as the central aspect of their life still need to have some other identity of their own, some sense of self that isn't just about giving to other people. If you are never filling the well, there eventually will be nothing more to give. It's taken me years to learn this and to navigate it somewhat effectively, but I definitely would have been much better served to have gone into it all with a real sense of just how hard it is and how much work goes into what is essentially billed as effortless and "natural."
