Because they are high enough on the pyramid that those things don't impact them directly and so they don't have to care about them. We can certainly have spirited debate about how to implement allowing for equal opportunity, but a lot of people don't even want to do that. They want to go back to the time when "everyone knew their place" and they could discriminate freely against those who had less social power.

However, in a few years, those people are going to either be dead or find themselves as a minority demographic and then it will be a lot easier to come to consensus. And they are freaking out about that, but there's not really anything they can do to stem that tide. It is coming and it will change things.
