Both of which come directly out of patriarchy. It's funny I was talking with a very progressive woman the other day and mentioned something about strict gender boxes being a part of patriarchy. She is all about challenging it, but didn't grasp that aspect because it's so deeply embedded she thought it was true (and not just a core aspect of patriarchal propoganda). Once I talked to her about two-spirits in various cultures, the prevalence of intersex births, the rising number of people who identify as non-binary, she finally conceded that this whole idea that men and women are very, very different was mostly a social construct. We may never know for sure exactly how much is nature and how much is nurture, because you can't ethically raise children outside of culture, but given how varied gender roles and expectations have been through time, and how different they are in some cultures, I think it's pretty clear that humans are on a continuum, with culture trying hard to enforce the poles.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
