But saying that women have been oppressed for thousands of years is not holding you responsible for what happened 5k years ago. Besides being a statement of fact, it's noting that this legacy is still in effect TODAY and that is what men are being held responsible for - for what is going on right now.

Going back to the OP, when I mention that feminism has been white centric all along, it's because it speaks to how it is still white-centric today. If it were no longer the case, I'd say something like "In the past...." but because that isn't the case for either feminism or patriarchy, it's appropriate to be inclusive. And, saying this does not mean I think absolutely every single feminist in the history of the movement has been white-centric, because that's clearly not true - but it is still true of the larger movement as a whole in the same way that saying men have perpetrated and benefited from patriarchy (unintentionally at times) doesn't point to what every single last person in the demographic does. It speaks to a broad sociological dynamic that is overwhelmingly in place.

Most North Americans have been taught to think of themselves as individuals and have a hard time grappling with the concept that they participate in a culture - both by their actions and words but also by their inactions and their silence. That's what we're talking about here. Does that make more sense to you now?

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
