But that's just in the area of children's television. There are many, many other areas of media where straight white able-bodied men still dominate - even if the movie is about a Disney Princess. We can acknowledge the progress that's been made, but the reality is, there's still a huge backlash to all sorts of non-androcentric, non-white portrayals. Remember the Gilette ad? Or the Cheerios ad from a few years back that featured an interracial couple and a biracial child. A large segment of White American largely lost their minds over that.
I'm not saying this stuff to make a buck. I'm saying that when there is still lots of room to improve, I'm not letting my foot up off the gas in asking for that. According to the UN, it will be another 286 years before the world achieves actual gender equality. I don't care how far we've come - that is completely unacceptable and I'm not going to pretend we're "pretty close" when that is demonstrably not the case.
