But that's the thing, they often aren't around - only 23% of kids are being raised by male/female parents in the home. Within in 10 years of divorce, 2/3 of kids have lost touch with their dads. Sometimes dads die. So it's a really good thing that other relationships can help boys to become successful adults.
Boy's mental and emotional health is suffering due to the pressures of living in a patriarchal dominance hierarchy and the tight restrictions of The Man Box (the restrictive rules of masculinity in our culture) as well as things like poverty and not having 3 stable and secure adults in their lives.
If you want a study on that, I discuss two of them in this story:

"Young men’s mental health is in a worrisome state. Their bravado masks deep insecurities, depression, and frequent thoughts of suicide. Men in the Man Box in the US and UK are statistically significantly more likely to meet a screening standard for depression than men outside the Man Box.
Furthermore, all young men’s rates of suicidal ideation are troubling, with particularly high rates among men in the Man Box."
