Cognitive scientists believe that only about 2% of thought is actually conscious. The rest comes out of things like stereotypes, cultural narratives, childhood training, media, etc. We're all guilty of unconscious biases around things - some to a greater degree than others, for sure, but it really is time to make it clear that only a fraction of discrimination comes out of blatant malice. Some does, to be sure, but a lot of it is that subconscious stuff just having it's say. And that's why it's so important that we acknowledge and grapple with these deeply held norms and myths when they don't serve us or the society as a whole.

Good for you for noticing. I think that kind of self-awareness is the first step in finding yourself doing that less often.
