Editing is hard work and those who do that hard work have every right to maintain the standards that they deem fit for their publication. I've struggled with similar things at times and finally just gotten to the point where I say, as you have here, "It's my sandbox, and if you want to play here, you have to do it on my terms." People who take notes from a publication editor personally can go publish elsewhere.
