Encouraging people to give away all of their power to experts should be a thing of the past, something that our parents did in the 50s because they didn’t know better. Unfortunately, it isn’t. You are exactly correct that you are the world expert on your own body. This is a huge pet peeve of mine and I hate that this mindset is still so prevalent. “Do what your doctor tells you.” Pfft!

A while back my mom was suffering from some GI issues that were causing her to waste away. I was very concerned but she just wanted to keep doing what the doctor said. Finally, another doctor she was seeing for something else told her she needed to get a different doctor — that she was not going to last much longer if she didn’t. Fortunately, she listened to him becuase she wasn’t going to listen to me. Since then she has nearly been killed by other doctors at least two other times. Never, ever, blindly trust someone who is an “expert.”

I only want to work with health care professionals who include me as an important part of the diagnostic and treatment process. Unfortunately, they aren’t always easy to find.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
