Even a lot of "progressive" white guys still don't really get it. They want to try, but they are still too entrenched in the privilege of their experiences that they don't look hard enough and with enough empathy at what it's like to not have that. In general, I really like Sedaris a lot. I've read a bunch of his books and gone to see him speak, and yet, I'm not all that surprised by his failure to recognize that making fun of your own dysfunction and pain is a different animal than making fun of that experienced by people with a lot less social power.
