Except that Jen isn't against anyone, is constantly wearing shirts encouraging kindness, has gay friends she loves (who also voted for Trump), etc. It's an entirely different scenario than with your Dad. I honestly don't know what exactly her reasons were (except that she grew up in a small Appalachian town) and those conservative leanings are deep in her subconscious. She said that despite the things she doesn't like about him (which are many) she still thought he was the better choice. There probably is a lot of cognitive dissonance going on there, but that's not the same as being stupid or a Nazi. This is a woman with a Master's degree and my few other friends who I am pretty sure made the same choice are also highly educated and don't wish harm on anyone. One has a gay daughter.

The point of this is not to encourage people to be gracious to Trump voters. It's to say that we need to better understand them if we don't want them to do something similar in the future. Writing them off as stupid and evil doesn't accomplish that.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
