Good one! And yes, fewer and fewer women are interested in relationships with men or marriage (Pew says 50% of guys are looking and only 35% of women are). Amongst women who have done the marriage thing, the trend is to not remarry or live with a man. If they want (human) companionship, they tend to have live-apart relationships.
A mere 50 years ago in the US, women couldn't have credit cards or home loans in their own name. I'm sure it's similar in the UK. Refusing to recognize the implications of that sort of financial constraint and what it offers when it's no longer there is a miss on the part of men wanting heterosexual relationships.
