He might want to imagine what it would be like if he suddenly had to start going by a different name, and how that might feel to him, how his sense of self and perhaps his cultural identity might be impacted by that, to say nothing of the paperwork and rigamarole. It's fine if people do change their names (sometimes guys even do that) but it shouldn't be a given. In fact, in some countries it isn't typical and in a few it's even illegal for a woman to take her husband's name.

Thanks for bringing up the coverture, where a woman's rights and legal identity were pretty much erased because she was now the property of her husband.
