Cultures that don’t come out of the legacy of patriarchal dominance hierarchies are more likely to view women and men as equally valuable and equally important; even if they have separate designated roles, those roles are intended to support and complement each other. Women are not viewed as the “helpmeets” and sidekicks of men, but as true partners who have their own part to play in both the family and the society.
Understanding how patriarchal marriage norms arose out of a history of both conquest and child marriage helps us to better understand some of the dynamics that are still in our collective unconscious — about the role of women in the world, as well as in heterosexual relationships.
