The jury has to make their decision based on the laws on the books (not the ones that would make better sense) as well as whether or not the prosecution proved their point. I don't like the idea of any private citizens (much less children) leaving their homes armed with the intention of "helping the police" but until that is a criminal act, and we have more nuance in the "self defense" standards, we're kind of hamstrung here.
