How many times must I say this? The issue is not raw numbers, it's pervasiveness. Men who aren't in prison don't get raped or sexually assualted at near the levels of all women, no matter their demographic. A high number among a small, particular subset of men does not overshadow that pretty much every woman has some experience with sexual violence, and many have a lot of experience with it - and a lot of men have zero experience with this. Which is exactly what my story was about.
You have almost certainly never been afraid in public and you also most likely don't know any men who have been. Meanwhile, I don't know any women who have not been afraid, who don't need to been on high alert much of the time, who have never been the victims of sexual violence, who have never been assaulted and raped. All the women I know, of any age, any political party, any geographic area have without exception been subject to sexual violence since they were young girls - at a minimum. And, I've never met a woman who didn't say the exact same thing. Many have been subjected to other sorts of violence as well. I've literally never met a single woman who hasn't experienced this because it's a pervasive dynamic. Meanwhile, the vast majority of straight, white, middle-class men have so little experience with this that they don't even realize how ubiquitous it is for women. I've already stipulated to the fact that by raw numbers more men experience violence - but the fact remains, that they are a small sliver of the male population. What about this don't you understand?
