I couldn't readily find the quote but Brené Brown says something along the lines of "Humans are social animals and it's not reasonable to think we can be completely divorced from other people's inputs, but at the same time, we can't take our entire sense of self from what other people say."

I think she also says that the way to balance this is to give greater weight to the inputs from people you trust and who you know actually care about you (and who aren't just trying to flatter you or tear you down for their own ends).
