I do think that because so many women had to go into the workforce during the war, that the highly generalized roles of the 50s were a way to push them back into the home so that returning troops could have the jobs that had been filled by women while they were overseas.

I completely agree that masculinity as it is constructed in this culture drives insecurity and what I would characterize as weakness.
