I do think that, in general, movies about romance tend to appeal more to women than to men, for a variety of reasons, I’m sure. And yes, there are some that men also enjoy. I agree with you about Somewhere In Time. But even though more women might enjoy romance stories, that doesn’t mean that all stories about women must be or are romances. That was my point. Not all movies with chicks in them are chick flicks.

Most commercials are targeted towards women or all (except for beer, and men’s razors and a few other things) because women purchase about 80% of US goods and services. But another part of my point is that even movies or shows that are targeted towards a broad audience tend to primarily feature stories about men, with most of the dialogue being between men. Even a lot of movies that seem to prominently feature women fail the Bechdel test. In order to pass, a movie must have at least two women in it who have names and talk to each other about something other than a man. Only about 50% of movies pass that, and it hasn’t improved at all since the 1990s. This erases women as people in their own right — and makes them just antecedents and love interests to men and perpetuates the myth that men wouldn’t watch or be interested in shows about women and their lives (because those must be only about girly things).
