I don't have any issues with merit being used as a metric in some arenas. For example, not all doctors have the same level of skill. I want a skilled one to work on me. But I do agree that we can still treat everyone with respect. A skilled doctor might be hopeless in some other area where someone else is proficient. Valuing everyone for their differences and for their basic humanity sounds like a good idea to me.
