I got scolded on Facebook the other day for something similar - for pointing out that a meme encouraging people to "love selflessly" was potentially encouraging unbalanced relationships and encouraging women in particular to martyr themselves in the name of being loving. I got the same kinds of "why so serious" feedback.
Because words and the concepts we convey with them have meaning, and create our society - that's why. I'm glad you spoke up, although I'm sorry that you experienced that much backlash for doing so. Hopefully it makes at least one or two people think though.
