I have next to no sympathy for men who are flipping out about losing privilege that is completely and totally unearned. Being born with a penis conveys no special qualifications on you - for anything except writing your name in the snow. Time to grow up and act like an actual man (rather than like a spoiled child having a tantrum).

Angry white men are hurt and angry and bewildered. They’re right to be angry. They’ve been screwed. Heck, I’m angry too. But in the countless interviews I’ve given since the election, I’m always asking the same questions: Was it immigrants who issued those predatory loans that lost them their homes? Was it feminist women who outsourced their jobs and created deals that let billionaires pay no taxes? Did LGBT people embark on ruinous trade deals? Of course not. America’s angry white men are right to be angry, but they are delivering their mail to the wrong address.

— Kimmel, Michael. Angry White Men (p. xiv). PublicAffairs. Kindle Edition.

Kimmel points out that there is ample data suggesting that greater gender equality is good for men (and for everyone), leading to better health, stronger relationships, and greater happiness. Patriarchy teaches us to look at everything as a zero-sum proposition. Somebody else has to lose in order for you to win, but rather than assuming that gains in equality and fair treatment indicate less for men (and for white men, in particular), more men are beginning to understand that they have lots to gain by embracing a fairer, more gender equitable society. A win/win scenario is possible.

It wasn't agriculture alone that changed things. We had nearly 5k years of it before patriarchy really took off.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
