I laughed all the way through this - not at you, because you are spot on, but at Peterson and his ilk, who are so comically deluded and don't have a shred of actual anthropology or any other type of science on their sides, but who also don't seem to care about that. As I'm sure you are already well aware, strict sexual monogamy is not practiced in all sorts of cultures around the world. They might have the institution of marriage, but also have various arrangements that allow for extra-pair liasons of all different kinds, from partible paternity, to special days where infidelity is allowed and even encouraged, to just general acceptance of other lovers as a part of life.

Strict sexual monogamy is almost unknown in the animal world, even amongst species that nest together, and tends to take place only under very specific conditions. And as you also have pointed out, don't we functionally have enforced monogamy in the West as it is? All except for the part where there's already a high rate of divorce and infidelity. How is that going to be impacted by further mores and strictures that demand monogamy? I'm just shaking my head at the absurdity of it all.

Good piece. Glad that you wrote it!

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
