I read The Bluest Eye maybe 20 years ago and it completely opened my own eyes to the damage that is done when peope who look like me are the only ones who can ever possibly be considered to be valuable or beautiful. I grew up too tall to truly fit in, but at least I was blonde and white.
That book seared into my brain a whole new world that I had never considered before including a lot of the things that are wrong with our culture - which is no doubt why certain people do not want their children reading it.
Still, I hate that this is happening, with this book or with any. Great essay!
