I think you hit the nail on the head. Patriarchy is a dominance based hierarchy and guys have been told their whole lives that they need to compete for rank, but also that women are inherently inferior to them. I also think many men do look at women as consumables. For really insecure guys, the person who is supposed to be there to make you feel good, to enhance your self-esteem and be your side-kick is now threatening to outshine you and some guys just don't like that. Fortunately, a lot of guys aren't this shallow and insecure. When my husband's co-worker asked him if he wasn't intimidated by me when we first met, he said, "No way!" He thought a strong, independent woman was intriguing and sexy - because he didn't need me to shore up his ego by being his inferior.
