I think you've really hit the nail on the head. Patriarchy is an extreme gender binary and those who won't conform to that often get policed to get back into line. Meanwhile, all around the world there are all kinds of cultures that accept that there are more than two genders or sexualities. I've been meaning to write something about that. Maybe I will now....
