I was reading something the other day about this, although I don't think there are any easy answers. Maybe it's the glorification of "busy" that devalues making time for real connections, maybe it's an outcropping of hook-up culture where other people are viewed as transactional; maybe it's the rise in the use of devices and social media rather than actual IRL friendships? Could be a bit of all of the above, with some other factors thrown in there as well? In any case, it is disheartening.
