Nobody but landed white men were "real" citizens for the first 100 years. That was what this country was founded on - a clear and distinct dominance based hierarchy of power and privilege - not some jingoistic paean to equality and justice. If you want to believe in a feel-good fairy tale, I can't stop you, but I'm also not going to waste any more time on this subject. Read a history book FFS if you won't believe me.
