I'm guessing that you are not having this sort of visceral and largely subconscious freak out about a changing world because you do not feel threatened by it in the same way. People whose sense of self is based in unearned power and social position are more susceptible if they feel this might be taken away, and I'm guessing by what you've said that your sense of self is richer than that.
