In my 5 years of writing constantly about cultural myths I've really realized just how much of it is flat out wrong, or at least mostly wrong. This particularly one is a doozy and it's incredible how long it has held up - as you say, with the help of serious people.

Can you give some examples of the folk etymology errors? I'd love to learn more about that.
