In my experience, when a man says something like that, which doesn't actually make all that much sense, it's not so much that he really believes it, but more that he's grasping for some way to put you back "in your place" somehow. The fact that you have chosen to speak, dared to imagine yourself as having something important to say, or whatever it is that pokes at his subconscious beliefs means that he needs to find a way to shut that down, no matter how irrational it sounds. I see this happening All.Of.The.Time - to me and to other women writers. The objection is tangential or picky about something that isn't the main point of the story just so they can ding you on something. In some cases, it's down right absurd, such as with this guy, but it's because he doesn't even know what upsets him about you and your writing (because he has so little access to his own emotional landscape) so he finds a way to lash out and try to make you feel bad too. That's my armchair analysis, in any case.

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother, I'm a sinner, I'm a saint. I do not feel ashamed. I'm your hell, I'm your dream, I'm nothing in between.
