In Paleolithic times, most food was provided by gatherers, not hunters, just as it still is in many hunter-gather tribes. Hunting is hit or miss - gathering can much more reliably yield food.

I will agree with you that masculinity and femininity in our cultures are a social construct that arose primarily with the advent of patriarchy, just 6-9 k years ago, and that everyone should get to be who they naturally.
