I think the reason people tend to equate non-monogamy and sex is largely because sex is perhaps the one thing that has been universally accepted as something that is not shared outside of a committed relationship.

In Western cultures and some others. There are plenty of cultures where strict sexually monogamy isn't the norm and is even considered strange or stingy.
