Indeed - but the fact remains that most men (and women) are deeply in the sway of their socialization and the messages they are bombarded with daily from the media, from their peers, from their family about who they are supposed to be and how they are supposed to act. Cognitive science says only about 2% of what we believe is thought is conscious cognition - the rest are impulses coming from deep in our subconscious minds and heavily influenced by the things I mentioned above. Only a few people are self-aware enough to bump that level up another few percentage points - and even then, we're still largely not nearly as in control of ourselves as we like to imagine that we are.
