Interesting. Perhaps it's because the women you knew are truly only interested in women in a sexual sense and with men, there's at least a possibility of a relationship developing. Of course, women have real relationships with other women, but I know lots of bisexual women, including myself, who are much more geared towards men, particularly on the relationship side of things.

Or, it could be something else entirely. We're all deeply indoctrinated into cultural norms and expectations, and even when some of those have been rejected, there's a lot that lives on in the subconscious.
