It probably depends on the culture to some extent, but in general, egalitarian cultures value cooperation and keeping the peace. They believe that everyone has value and that nobody has the right to control or otherwise abuse others. Dominance based hierarchies such as patriarchy are Might Makes Right systems. Egalitarian cultures are not.
