I've always hated those kinds of depictions as well. They really aren't really realistic. I don't know a single woman who had a lot of pain or bled at her first penetrative sexual experience. It's an old myth that just keeps getting perpetrated to reinforce the essentially made up idea of virginity, which is a overwhelmingly a social construct.
