I've come to realize that a lot of writers are lazy -especially male writers (most of them) about women characters. Too often they rely on old tropes or cultural narratives to help tell their story because it's easier than creating fresh, interesting characters that tell a different story than the same old same one. It's boring and at times upsetting.
Meanwhile, there are women across America who are platonically combining households to co-raise children and support each other and I agree, a storyline like that for Jen and Judy would have been a lot more interesting than replaying the tired, outdated one where women who don't become mothers have to die because they have no other use.
