I've encountered this quite a bit, for example, when writing about how it is disempowering to routinely refer to women as girls in places where we wouldn't refer to men as boys. Even a lot of women object and say it's no big deal. They can't see how language literally creates the framework of cultural dynamics or maybe they just don't want to be bothered to have to think about it.
