Just last evening I saw a man describing Thunberg as "mentally ill." As the parent of an autistic child, I felt compelled to point out that this was not only an incorrect characterization of autism, but that it was insensitive. I pointed out that she was actually neurodivergent.
This guy came back at me hard - because he really wanted to defend his right to undermine and dismiss Thunberg as "crazy." Doesn't matter that she is a child. If she has the audacity to challenge the world of grown up men, they are going to attack her in every way imaginable. I applaud her courage, but I wish she didn't have to endure all of the attacks and threats - simply for caring about the planet.
I also think that she chose her clapback at Tate to hit him where he lives. That shit matters to him, so that's why she said it. It would be better if our culture didn't equate penis size with masculinity - whether it's in fact or via "energy" but I can imagine that it's tough to endure all of that abuse and always take the high road.
I appreciated your thoughtful piece.
