Well, as you say, there is no universal woman or universal man, but in general, men are attracted to women who are self-confident (women find that attractive in men as well). Plenty of not so conventionally attractive people do great in dating/love because they own who they are believe that they have a lot to offer someone else. Most people don't want someone who is really neurotic or clingy.
