Making people who have access to guns prove that they known how to use them safely doesn’t take self-defense out of the hands of poor people any more than them having to get a driver’s license takes cars out of their hands. C’mon… you’re grasping at straws on that one.
In 2019 there were only about 1,547 defensive uses of guns and 1,837 unintentional deaths. If you’re killing yourself with bad eating habits, that’s on you, but if you need a gun to defend yourself, you’ve agreed that it’s a deadly weapon. There is no sane argument on earth for why anyone should have access to something that can kill themself and others with no proof of training or proficiency.
And no, more people are not killed by cops than accidentally by guns. About 1,000 people are shot each year by the police, and most of them are suspects of crimes. Nearly twice that number are killed unintentionally by guns, many of them children.
I’m not sure where you’re getting your data, but it seems to be more wishful thinking and rah-rah rhetoric than anything else.
