Men and women aren't that different. Differences between individuals are much more pronounced than inherent ones related to gender. That being said, the way that they are socialized is entirely different, and that can't be discounted. It's something that has been well studied and document in scientific ways.

For little boys, watching television appears to reinforce their already positive self-regard, while for girls, watching television appears to dampen it. This is concerning given that there are more than twice as many male characters as there are female characters on kid’s TV shows.” (2)
