Modern "traditional" ideas about masculinity (some only a few hundred years old, others only a few thousand) that demonstrably hurt men and everyone else shouldn't be palatable to so many men. That's the real issue here.

The fact that so many guys want to defend that shit because they are so overly identified with it as somehow "naturally who men are" drives violence in the culture, as well as a host of other issues. This isn't maleness - it's masculine norms from this period of time in this part of the world. The more men who recognize that and help to shift masculine norms to things that are less harmful to men and to everyone else, the better.
