Most evangelicals I know aren't actually critical thinkers nor actual students of the Bible. They perpetrate a type of Christianity that would horrify Christ, so saying that they ought to know better doesn't mean that they actually do.

Ephesians 5:24 says “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” Why doesn't "in everything" include sex? Seems to me if someone were going to take the Bible as the literal, inviolate word of the Lord, they would likely interpret that verse to mean in absolutely every way.
