My sister-in-law, who is one of my dearest friends, voted for Trump, although to her credit, she now regrets it. She’s also an NRA certified gun safety instructor who has very different views than I do about what sensible gun laws are. Besides the fact that she’s in my family so I can’t not associate with her, I love her for her other qualities. We don’t talk about politics or guns all that often, but when we do, we do it respectfully and try to listen to each other. I think that’s where change can begin — when we don’t just shut each other out.
This guy has spent the last 30 years befriending KKK members and has gotten some 200 of them to quit. I don’t know that every situation calls for this approach, but I think at least some of them do.
